The 2025 Canadian Premier League season marks the 7th season of the top level of Canadian professional soccerCavalry FC are the defending champions, having defeated Forge FC 1-0 in the 2024 final at ATCO Field in Calgary. The season began on April 5, 2025 – the earliest start date in league history.

The Canadian Premier League consists of eight teams from across Canada, representing five provinces. Forge FC currently leads the table with an unbeaten record through 18 matches, holding a narrow one-point advantage over Atlético Ottawa.

The top teams qualify for the 2026 CONCACAF Champions Cup, with the regular season winner and playoff champion both earning berths.

The 2025 season features the highest salary budget in league history, with teams able to spend up to $1,282,000 (including U-21 incentives).

A new domestic player rule also allows players with three seasons of CPL experience or three years of Canadian residency to count as domestic players.

Key Season Highlights

Bobby Smyrniotis (Forge FC) became the 2024 CPL Coach of the Year after six nominations, finally claiming his first coaching award despite Forge’s success over the years. Under his leadership, Forge FC remains unbeaten this season with 11 wins and 7 draws.

Tommy Wheeldon Jr. (Cavalry FC) remains the longest-serving manager in the league, having coached Cavalry since the club’s inception in 2018.

He previously won Coach of the Year awards in 2019 and 2023. Under his guidance, Cavalry made history by becoming the first CPL team to defeat a Liga MX side, beating Pumas UNAM in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

Mauro Eustáquio (York United FC) was named CPL Manager of the Month for July 2025 after guiding York United to a perfect 3-0 record that month. The 32-year-old Portuguese-Canadian manager took over in November 2024.
