The top two teams in each group automatically advance, but the expanded 48-team tournament also creates a new Round of 32 by including the eight best third-place teams.

|---|---|---|
| Haiti | Group C | June 19 |
| Turkey | Group D | June 19 |

No team has yet been mathematically eliminated. Elimination becomes possible once a team has played two matches with no points and cannot reach enough points to qualify, even as a third-place side.
Best Third-Place Race
The eight best third-placed teams across all twelve groups will join the 24 automatic qualifiers in the Round of 32. With twelve groups in play, third place does not automatically mean elimination
A team finishing third with six points, or even four points combined with a strong goal difference, stands a realistic chance of advancing.
The cut-off in recent expanded tournaments tends to fall around three to four points, though goal difference almost always plays a decisive role when the points totals are level.

How Third-Place Qualification Works
When a team finishes third in its group, its record is compared against every other third-place finisher across the tournament. Only the eight best advance.
The ranking is determined first by points, then goal difference across all three group matches, then goals scored, then disciplinary record, and finally by FIFA ranking if everything else remains equal.
This means a team that loses its first two matches still has something to play for on the final matchday, provided it can pile up goals and keep a clean sheet.
The format also rewards attacking football in a way that suits teams with prolific strikers. A 4-0 win on Matchday 3 can leapfrog a third-place rival who picked up four points with two narrow results.
Every goal counts, and teams playing purely for qualification rather than goal difference often end up regretting it.
