How to Read the World Cup 2026 Bracket
Each Round of 16 spot is decided by the outcome of two Round of 32 matches. Once a Round of 32 match concludes, the winning team’s name will be bolded in this table and the loser removed, so the table always reflects the most current confirmed picture without needing to rewrite any of the surrounding explanation.
Canada is the first team confirmed into the Round of 16, after beating South Africa 1-0 in their Round of 32 tie. Canada will play Morocco in the Round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup. Morocco advanced by defeating the Netherlands 1-1 (3-2 on penalty kicks) in their Round of 32 matchup. The Round of 16 match between Canada and Morocco is scheduled for Saturday, July 4, in Houston.

Round of 16 Schedule Format Explained
This is the first World Cup played under the 48-team format, and the Round of 32 itself is an entirely new stage that did not exist before this tournament. In the previous 32-team format, the knockout stage began directly at the Round of 16.
Now, every team must win an additional match before reaching that stage, which means the players who eventually lift the trophy in July will have completed eight matches across the tournament rather than seven.
The Round of 32 draws on three sources to fill its bracket. Four of the group winners are paired against the group runners-up from a different group. The other eight group winners are matched against third-placed teams that advanced as one of the eight best across the twelve groups. The remaining group runners-up play against each other.
Once that round is finished, the sixteen winners move directly into the fixed bracket shown above, with the path split into two halves so that no two teams on the same side can meet before the semi-finals.
Matches that finish level after ninety minutes move to thirty minutes of extra time. If scores remain tied after that, the match is decided by a penalty shootout. There are no replays at any stage of the knockout rounds.
