Atletico Madrid Win 2020-21 La Liga Title Against Valladolid 2-1
Atletico Madrid clinched their eleventh La Liga title on the final matchday of the season, after defeating Valladolid from 2-1. It was their first title since 2013-14 and the Real Madrid was the only other team to have won the title since Atletico Madrid last did so.
This is only the second time in 17 years that a team other than Barcelona or Real Madrid has won the title, with Atleti claiming the other one under Simeone in 2014.
Atletico went top into the game since December and on the back of Beating Osasuna with two goals in the eight minutes, a victory that was so dramatic it felt like it would prove decisive.
Since Winner their first Spanish championship as Atletico Aviacion in 1939/40, the capital club have also topped LaLiga in 1940/41, 1949/50, 1950/51, 1965/66, 1969/70, 1972/73, 1976/77, and 1995/69.
Atletico has done nothing the easy way this season, with their 10-point lead in February cut to two in May and their position at the top of the table.
Several Atletico fans gathered in Valladolid’s Plaza Mayor in the hours before kick-off to sing-song and a similar number made it outside the stadium, where they were cordoned off in a cess-pit of nerves and anticipation.
Meanwhile, Atleti‘s 1995/96 Laliga victory secured the club’s only ever leagues and cup double, as a team featuring Simeone followed up a Copa del Rey final win over Barca by finishing four points clear of a Valencia team coached by Aragones.
Aragones and Simeone are two of only three men who have won LaLiga with Atleti both as players and coaches. The other is Marcel Domingo, who was part of the side that lifted consecutive titles in 1949/50 and 1950/51, before managing Los Colcohoneros to league success in 1969/70.
Now Atletico is LaLiga’s third-most successful club, behind Barcelona (26 League title) and Real Madrid (34).
