With less than two months to go until the 2026 FIFA World Cup, uncertainty continues to haunt Iran’s participation in the tournament. Despite the Iranian national team’s ongoing preparations, geopolitical tensions have prompted a fresh threat of withdrawal from the Iranian Football Federation (IFF).
While FIFA President Gianni Infantino recently dismissed these rumours, stating simply that ‘Iran is coming,’ a new official statement from the IFF has once again put the soccer world on high alert.
On April 15, the IFF released a new statement stating that the situation “remains unchanged” and playing in the United States, one of the three host nations, is still “neither safe nor appropriate” under the current conditions.
FIFA’s Latest Position
FIFA responded quickly this afternoon with a fresh official statement:
“FIFA continues to monitor the situation in Iran very closely. We remain in direct contact with the Iranian Football Federation. Our priority is to ensure a safe and successful tournament for all participating teams and fans. We will provide further updates as soon as there is clarity.”
This is the third time in the last six weeks that FIFA has issued a similar “monitoring” statement, highlighting the ongoing uncertainty.
Current Status of Iran in the Tournament

Iran is placed in Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand. Their scheduled group-stage matches are:
- Iran vs New Zealand – Los Angeles
- Iran vs Belgium – Seattle
- Iran vs Egypt – Lumen Field
All three matches are on US soil, which remains the biggest obstacle for Iran.
As of April 15, 2026:
- Iran has not formally withdrawn yet.
- FIFA has given Iran an unofficial final deadline of April 30, 2026, to confirm participation.
- If no confirmation comes by then, a replacement team will be announced.
FIFA’s Ready Replacement Teams
FIFA has already put two Asian teams on official standby:
- Uzbekistan – Highest-ranked non-qualified AFC team
- Iraq – But they are already qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup
If Iran withdraws, Group G will be reduced to three teams. Each side will play only two group matches instead of three, and the top two will advance to the Round of 32.
Mexico Request
Iran requested that FIFA relocate their group-stage matches from the U.S. to Mexico, citing safety concerns. FIFA rejected this request, insisting that all matches will proceed according to the original schedule.
Iran’s Group G Schedule

Iran is currently scheduled to play all three of its group matches in American cities:
| Date | Opponent | Venue |
|---|---|---|
| June 15, 2026 | New Zealand | Los Angeles, USA |
| June 21, 2026 | Belgium | Los Angeles, USA |
| June 26, 2026 | Egypt | Seattle, USA |
