The England national football team is one of the world’s oldest, playing its first representative match against Scotland in 1870 and the first recognised international fixture in 1872 at Hamilton Crescent in Glasgow.
In its early decades, England excelled in the British Home Championship against Scotland, Wales, and Ireland, building national pride and rivalry.
England first participated in the World Cup in 1950 and has since qualified for 16 of the 19 finals through 2022. They’ve made it to the semi-finals three times (1966, 1990, 2018) and hold a record for most quarter-final eliminations (seven).
Under Gareth Southgate (2016–2024), England experienced a revival, reaching the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and finals of Euro 2020 and Euro 2024. His leadership and integration of youth renewed national optimism.
The country has produced incredible talents such as Wayne Rooney, Harry Kane, Bobby Charlton, Gary Lineker, Jimmy Greaves, Michael Owen, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, and John Terry.
England hosted and won its only FIFA World Cup in 1966 at Wembley Stadium, beating West Germany 4–2 in the final. Geoff Hurst made history as the first player to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final.
Gareth Southgate is the current head coach and also a former player of the England National Football Team, who played as a defensive midfielder for the England team.
